Main Activities of CSO

  • The National Accounts of Afghanistan generate the figures of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) every year
  • Sector-wise GDP break-up
  • Agriculture - cereals & others, Fruits, Livestock
  • Industries -s Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Electricity, Gas, Water and Construction
  • Services - wholesales & retail trade; Transport, Storage, Communication, Finance, Insurance, Product of Government services, other services.
  • Annual Growth rate of the economy as measured by the GDP at current and constant price
  • CSO collects data from all sector of economy through on regular basis as well as ad-hoc survey.

Price/Inflation and Foreign Exchange Statistics
 

  • CSO publishes Consumer Price Index (CPI) at the National level collected for 6 provinces (Kabul, Heart, Kandahar, Jalalabad, Mazar-e-Sharif and Khost) every month. The provinces represent their regions respectively.
  • CSO has been publishing CPI for Kabul since 2003, at National level since 2004, and for 6 provinces since 2005.
  • A total of about 3000 price quotations are collected each month to generate the price statistics.
  • A CPI Bulletin is generated and circulated to important information users like MOF etc.
  • CSO monitors the average exchange rates for the major international currencies in the Kabul market

Statistical Yearbook

CSO collects information from all major ministries and organizations on their activities in their respective sectors, organizes and publishes information in the form a Statistical Yearbook. The Major components of information contained in the Yearbook are:

  • Area and Administrative Divisions of Afghanistan
  • Population Estimates
  • Education (including culture and media)
  • Health
  • Environment
  • National Accounts
  • Agriculture
  • Industry
  • Inflation and Foreign Exchange 
  • External Trade
  • Fiscal Statistics
  • Donor Assistance
  •  
  • National Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (NRVA)
  • CSO conducts the NRVA survey in collaboration with MRRD; NRVA is the only source of Poverty Statistics in the country
  •  
  • NRVA informs the nation on the progress of all Millennium Development Goals (MDGS), which are also part of ANDS indicators

 

  • NRVA has wealth of detailed information on many sectors.


NRVA 2007 provides information about 25 out of 49 MDG indicators. The major ones are:

  • Proportion of population below the poverty line
  • Net enrolment rates
  • Literacy rates
  • Infant Mortality Rate
  • Proportion of births attended by skilled health personnel
  • Unemployment rate of young people


Multi-Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS)

  • CSO conducts the MICS Survey in collaboration with UNICEF
  • MICS also informs the nation on the progress of many Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

MICS collects information on the following sectors

  • Children
  • Health and Nutrition of Women
  • Education 
  • Environment
  • Child Abuse
  • Water and Sanitation Facilities


Population and Housing Census

  • CSO is responsible to conduct the Population and Housing Census in collaboration with UNFPA
  • CSO is starting the House Listing all over the country on lst July 2009. the pilot census are likely to be conducted in 2010.
  • Census is one of the most comprehensive exercises taken up by CSO.
  • It provides wealth of information for planning and decision making in the country.


Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES)
 

  • CSO is conducting the IBES at present all over the country.
  • It will provide useful information for national accounts and economic planning in the country.
